North Carolina Architecture (Richard Hampton Jenrette Series in Architecture & the Decorative Arts)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-11-20 Summary: Wonderful Resource ... This is a lovely book full of information. photos and illustrations. I purchased it because I found my great-great-great grandfather's cabin in it through Google Book Search. My ancestor was a former slave and to "see" his humble cabin in the hills of North Carolina and learn about it was an incredible find. I really appreciate the research and effort that went into this book. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 1999-11-04 Summary: The finest book ever on the architecture of North Carolina. ... This is an exceptionally well written book on the various eras in the architectural development of what I consider to be the most architecturally diverse state in the union. I have lived in North Carolina all of my life and I have seen at least 3/4 of the structures mentioned in the book. Bishir does a great job of explaining the forces that lead to the development of these great monuments to society. The photography is quite good, but for some strange reason all of the color photos are in the back of the book out ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | This award-winning, lavishly illustrated history displays the wide range of North Carolina's architectural heritage, from colonial times to the beginning of World War II. North Carolina Architecture addresses the state's grand public and private buildings that have become familiar landmarks, but it also focuses on the quieter beauty of more common structures: farmhouses, barns, urban dwellings, log houses, mills, factories, and churches. These buildings, like the people who created them...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Thomas Day (1801-61), a free man of color from Milton, North Carolina, became the most successful cabinetmaker in North Carolina--white or black--during a time when most blacks were enslaved and free blacks were restricted in their movements and activities. His surviving furniture and architectural woodwork still represent the best of nineteenth-century craftsmanship and aesthetics. Patricia Phillips Marshall and Jo Ramsay Leimenstoll show how Day plotted a carefully charted course for...more

Jenrette: The Contrarian Manager
Editorial Reviews [1] ... Product Description | During his 40-year career on Wall Street, Dick Jenrette did things "differently." He co-founded the upstart firm of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and turned it into an international investment banking and securities powerhouse. As CEO of Equitable, he spurned "business as usual" tactics and revitalized the venerable but floundering insurer. Now Jenrette, famed as the Great Contrarian, offers his candid account of the lessons he learned and the unorthodox approaches he took in becoming a...more
[2] ... Review | Richard Jenrette--cofounder of investment banking and securities firm Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, and the retired head of Equitable Life, who is credited with saving the company from collapse--is a firm believer in developing strong CEOs, setting specific goals, preserving historic homes, and using astrology to make certain decisions. Zombie Island Massacre [VHS]
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2001-06-13 Summary: All island, no zombies and a poor excuse for a massacre! ... For starters any film featuring 'internationally acclaimed superstar' Rita Jenrette is a must see for every man, woman and beast. Add to this a title to rival 'Demented Death Farm Massacre', 'hedge' zombies, and a bus load of amateur actors (some seem animated in death even without the aid of zombification), and Troma have another glorious money spinner on their hands. As the cod-Vincent Price voice-over tells us in the trailer, we're in for a 'wonderful' holiday of "violence, terror, torture and death." Well, can ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2002-02-25 Summary: Jimi was right... "You're a voodoo child!" ... Maybe it's because I've studied voodoo history and island cults for years in grad school, but I highly suggest that you add "Zombie Island Massacre" to your movie collection now. A group of tourists decide to venture over to the remote island of Who-Knows-Where - Mistake #1. The tourists are too busy screwing around to notice the island is inhabited by blood-thirsty (and might I add, very scary) zombies - Mistake #2. A few voodoo ceremonies and ritulistic killings later and you're knee deep in a pool of terror! The ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2003-01-13 Summary: A Beautiful Book Of One Man's Exceptional Residences ... If you believe in reincarnation and love old houses, you would surely want to "come back" as Richard Hampton Jenrette! (Who knows, maybe HE is the reinarnation of Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, a peer, certainly, in the collection of wonderful houses.) This man has the most exquisite taste, a passion for historic houses and the decorative arts, and the means to indulge a lifestyle that can simply be described as sublime. This book is NOT a "how to" manual. It is an elegant recollection of a number of houses ...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | This is the story of one man's quest to breathe life back into some of America's most historically significant dwellings. Richard Jenrette's affinity for endangered historic sites has led to the restoration of such historic houses as Edgewater on the Hudson River; Millford Plantation and the Roper House, both in South Carolina; Ayr Mount in North Carolina; and Cane Garden in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
