Being a big fan of Jean Arthur I was once again rewarded with a classic romantic comedy , the type that made Arthur so popular in Hollywood during the late 1930's and early 40's. The wartime romance between Arthur and Joel McCrea is very nicely done and the on-screen chemistry is very obvious as you watch this film. However the real joy is the always delightful Charles Coburn who steals the show as a middle-aged man looking for lodging in the busy ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-10-28 Summary: Jean arthur is just so good in this! ... This is the second movie I've seem about the housing shortage in Washington, D.C. during the war. They probably should have had the Army put up tents in the suburbs? They called the best and brightest for the war effort to D.C. and then treated them all like bums when they got there! The romantic comedy of 1940's US manners here is classic. Today all the people would have been in sleeping bags and tents in backyards and vacant lots? I liked the movie because it reminded me of my Mom and my aunts. ...more
